Mercury Marine event marks 75th anniversary

January 21st, 2014

Mercury Marine will celebrate its 75th anniversary on Wednesday, marking the transition from its launch by a Wisconsin daily farmer to its growth into a leading provider of marine engines.

Mercury was founded by E. Carl Kiekhaefer in 1939, when he purchased a bankrupt engine manufacturing plant in Cedarburg, Wis., not far from the Kiekhaefer family farm. The plant’s assets included 300 outboard engines that a large mail-order retailer had rejected because of defects and operating problems.

Hoping to transform the engines into working capital to fund the future business he envisioned — magnetic separators for the dairy-farm industry — Kiekhaefer redesigned, rebuilt and sold the engines to the retailer that initially rejected them. The engines sold immediately, and Kiekhaefer suddenly found himself in the marine engine business.

Today Mercury directs the activities of more 5,400 employees in dozens of countries from its global headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wis., and works with more than 4,200 dealers and distributors around the world.

Mercury’s year-long 2014 celebration plans include events in locations throughout the world.

“Mercury will celebrate its 75th anniversary throughout 2014 in ways that will reflect our strong heritage of innovation and leadership in the marine industry,” Mercury president Mark Schwabero said in a statement. “We will conduct events in locations around the world that will engage our customers, suppliers, employees and communities and will recognize the roles those people and entities have played in establishing the foundation of our business and our future.”

Ferretti shipyard signs deal for 233-footer in China

January 21st, 2014

Ferretti Group shipyard CRN signed a letter of intent for the largest megayacht sold in the Chinese market by CRN and Ferretti Group and it is slated for delivery in 2017.

On Jan. 14, CRN signed the letter for a 68-meter (233-foot) megayacht in Weifang, a city in the central Shandong province of China. The Ancona shipyard, part of the Ferretti Group, specializes in the construction and sale of fully customized displacement megayachts in steel and aluminum that range from 40 to 90 meters.

“The signing of our first LOI for 2014 with a Chinese client is not only something to take pride in, but also a true witness of the strategic path we have embarked on,” CRN chairman and CEO Lamberto Tacoli said in a statement. “The conquest of new markets, and above all that of the Asia-Pacific basin, is indeed a short-term fundamental objective for the brand, which will be pursued as we continue to invest in our assets: design, innovation, craftsmanship and the Made in Italy [brand].”

The 68-meter-long and 12.5-meter-wide steel and aluminum yacht has been created by the Zuccon International Project.

One of the distinctive features of the new vessel is its floodable garage, which allows the tender to enter the water without using a crane. Introduced for the first time by CRN on the 60-meter M/Y J’Ade, exhibited for the first time at the Monaco Boat Show, the garage is now being applied to a vessel of larger dimensions.

The garage transforms a technical space into a new living area with a beach.

The signing was carried out in the presence of Tan Xuguang, chairman of Weichai Group and Ferretti Group; representatives of Weichai Group senior management; Tacoli, the CRN chairman and CEO; and Alessandro Tirelli, Ferretti Group Asia-Pacific sales director.

Xu Xinyu, executive president of Weichai Group and Ferretti Group, hosted the signing ceremony. Weichai Group owns a majority stake in the Ferrett Group.

Six vessels are being built at the Ancona shipyard — four steel and aluminum CRN megayachts, a 124-foot maxiyacht of the Ferretti Custom Line and a Riva, the 122-foot Mythos made of aluminum.

Last year, CRN built the 80-meter M/Y Chopi Chopi, the largest vessel built at the shipyard in its 50-year history and among the 100 biggest megayachts worldwide.

Hmm..återförsäljare i båtbranchen blir färre..

Sanningen är nog att få återförsäljare vill köpa på sig båtar som lagervara.

Baja Marine announces factory-direct sales

February 25th, 2014

Baja Marine is selling its Donzi and Fountain Powerboat brands factory-direct in what the company says is a response to changing consumer demand.

Baja Marine CEO Johnny Walker also announced that the company’s dealer partners that represent Baja and the Pro-Line fishing boat brand now can take orders for Donzi and Fountain models and service those customers after delivery.

The new program eliminates the need for dealers to stock these larger, more expensive boats in their showrooms, the company said.

“We recognize that many dealers are reluctant to inventory some of these bigger, higher-priced models,” Walker said in a statement. “However, we also know that they want to have a service relationship with the buyers who bring the boats back to their markets. So we see this program as a win-win for everyone concerned.”

Through the program, customers can work directly with the staff at Baja’s plant in Washington, N.C., where both brands are built, to buy, personalize and build new Donzi and Fountain powerboats. They also can take delivery at the factory.

“We’ve found that Donzi and Fountain customers really value having a personal relationship with the factory that is building their new high-performance boat,” Walker said. “Whether they are buying a boat to race in, to take to poker runs or simply to enjoy running offshore and in their local waters, these customers like being able to work with us directly on designing the hull graphics and equipping their boat with engines, features and options. And they want to come to the plant to see their boat being built.”

Fire damages boats in Washington marina

February 25th, 2014

A fast-moving fire Friday at a marina in northeast Washington destroyed seven boats and damaged at least eight others.

Four of the six boats that sank in the fire at Shelter Bay Marina near La Conner, Wash., were raised Monday, according to The Seattle Times.

The Swinomish Police Department, Skagit County Fire Department, Coast Guard and insurance companies will try to determine the fire’s cause and the total damage, which has been estimated at $1 million.

Six of the destroyed boats burned to the waterline and sank. The state Department of Ecology told the Times that it expects the last two boats to be raised today or Wednesday.

Once they are removed, environmental workers will continue to clean the wooden dock and nearby vegetation, as well as remove remaining debris from the water.

The recovered vessels are being barged to a shipyard.

All recoverable oil has been contained, the department said. More than 2,400 gallons of oil and fuel leaked into the harbor, with even more on board the sunken vessels. No effects on wildlife have been reported.
